Let me guess—you’ve been meaning to carve out a space that’s just for you, but life keeps getting in the way? Same. But here’s the thing: having a personal haven at home doesn’t need to be a luxury or a huge renovation project. It can actually be super simple and deeply satisfying. With just a few intentional choices, you can create a space that feels relaxing, elegant, and uniquely you. Your oasis can be created in a spare room - or even carved into an unused corner or cozy nook.

Here’s how what I think about when designing a “grown-up oasis” (no spa day required).

1. Invest In It Like You Would Your Wardrobe

I try to treat my space the same way I treat my closet—I invest in pieces that I love, and that make me feel good. That doesn’t mean everything has to be pricey, though! Some of my favorite finds have come from estate sales and thrift stores. Not only is it budget-friendly, but you also get those one-of-a-kind pieces that feel personal and full of character. It’s like treasure hunting… but for grown-ups.

2. Start With One Show-Stopper Piece

Every space needs a moment—that one thing that pulls the whole look together. Maybe it’s a stunning mirror, a cozy armchair you never want to leave, or a bold piece of art that speaks to you. Once you’ve found it, build around it. Let it guide your color palette and style choices. Trust me, this one piece can make everything else fall into place.

3. Keep It Flexible If You’re a Style Shifter

If you’re anything like me and love to refresh your space often, keep your big-ticket items neutral. Then, have fun with the accessories. Pillows, throws, rugs, and even dishes can totally change the vibe of a room—and they’re much easier (and cheaper) to swap out when you’re craving something new.

4. Only Choose What Makes You Happy

I’m a firm believer in decorating with intention. If a piece doesn’t make you smile when you see it, it doesn’t belong in your space. Whether it’s artwork, a sculpture, or even a little vase—let your accessories spark joy (yes, Marie Kondo was onto something).

5. Bring In The Life - Literally

There’s something magical about sunlight and greenery. If your space gets good light and you enjoy caring for plants, add a few leafy friends. Choose pots that complement your look and watch the space come alive. Not into the plant parent life? No worries—fresh flowers can give you that same sense of life and color (plus, no long-term commitment required). I personally skip the faux stuff unless it’s really convincing. Otherwise, they just tend to collect dust.

6. Be Picky About Lighting

Lighting can make or break a mood. I love choosing light fixtures that reflect my style, but I pay extra attention to the bulbs I use. Go for soft, flattering lighting that feels warm—not harsh or sterile. The right light can instantly make a space feel more inviting. I look for bulbs that are 2700 to 3000k temperature. That's the sweet spot for perfect, warm light. Dimmable lamps or ceiling lights also allow you to adjust how light or dark your space is whenever you like!

7. Thoughtful Choices = Less Clutter

Here’s something I’ve learned over time: when you choose pieces with care, clutter kind of takes care of itself. It’s all about being intentional—no need to overfill your space. Just let every item have a purpose or bring you joy. When your design choices are carefully considered and have a reason for being in your space, you'll find you actually need (and want) far less to pull your vision together.

8. Make Your Bookshelves Personal

If you have a bookcase, let it tell your story. I’ve edited mine down to books I actually love or plan to read. Then I mix in personal mementos—like a small sculpture I found while traveling, or a framed photo from a special day. It turns a practical space into something meaningful and totally “you.”

9. Now Take a Breath… and Visualize

Imagine yourself sinking into your favorite chair, surrounded by textures you love, soft lighting, maybe even your favorite music playing. This is your space. Your little escape. And yes, it’s totally within reach.

If you're planning on painting the space that is now your oasis, and are looking for some paint color inspo; here are some favorites from my collection:

For darker, moodier options (which are also deeply relaxing!), I love these palettes:
