I used to treat the way I stored my seasonal decor like an afterthought—tossing things into tubs just to get them out of sight. But eventually, that “I’ll deal with it later” energy caught up with me. Each season, finding what I wanted became a guessing game, and decorating felt more like digging than designing.
And - don't get me started on the stuff I accumulated! Every season, I used to have the same conversation with myself: “This year, I’ll only pull out what I really love.” But somewhere between swapping out pillows and untangling garlands, I'd realize I had once again collected more than I remembered -- which is probably also due to the fact I knew I had certain things but couldn't find them. So, I went out and bought more! Can you relate?!
Seasonal decorating can bring so much joy—it’s a creative way to refresh your home’s energy and reflect the rhythm of the year. But when the bins, boxes, and random decor overflow, that joy can turn into overwhelm pretty quickly.
If this sounds familiar, you’re in a great spot because through my own chaotic experiences, I figured out a super easy way to simplify seasonal decor storage and planning - and I’m sharing it all with you today!
Decorating with Purpose
I always start by thinking about how I want my home to feel before I think about what I’ll use. For fall, it might be cozy and layered; for spring, bright and airy. That mindset shift—decorating with feeling instead of “stuff”—is what makes seasonal changes look natural instead of cluttered.
I’ve learned that I don’t need to buy new things every season. Instead, I rotate textures, move pieces to new rooms, and mix in subtle color shifts. In the right color, a chunky knit throw that felt “fall” in the living room can easily feel “winter” in the bedroom with a different accent pillow beside it. It’s less about accumulating, more about curating.
Today, I want to share my tracking and organization system with you. You can download the PDF here. It includes printable tracking sheets and blank label templates, all ready to go; so you can use the very same system I do to organize, store, and keep track of all your seasonal decor.
Here’s how I use the system:
Step 1: Label & Locate
This step sounds simple, but it’s a game changer. Instead of a mountain of mystery bins, I take a few minutes to label each one clearly by season, and if I have a lot of stuff for that season, I may include the area I’m using the decor in —like “Fall: Entryway + Dining” or “Winter: Living Room.”
You can label your boxes in any way that makes sense to you. Some of my clients number their boxes instead, some just write the season, and others use their labels to describe what’s inside (I use my tracking sheet for that).
This step is about making your decor easy to find and even easier to put away. I started small—one season at a time—and slowly built a system that actually made sense to me. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s creating a rhythm.
When every bin has a home, decorating stops being a production and becomes something you can actually look forward to.
Step 2: Sort by “Keep • Refresh • Release”
This is where the design mindset comes in. Decluttering is design—it’s editing what no longer fits your home’s story.
As I unpack each season, I sort through what I truly love, what could use a little update, and what it’s time to let go of. Sometimes that means donating a decor piece that doesn’t fit my palette anymore, or setting aside an item that could shine again with a simple refresh (a new candle, a fabric steam, a coat of matte spray).
The goal isn’t to keep everything—it’s to make sure what you do keep reflects the style you’re creating now.
Step 3: Style Planning for Next Season
Before I close up my bins, I like to jot down a few notes for the next round—what I want to add, replace, or rethink. It’s a simple way to plan ahead and keep my home feeling fresh without overbuying.
I think about colors and textures I want to highlight next time. Maybe warmer metallics for winter, or lighter linens for spring. Planning in advance helps me decorate intentionally instead of impulsively—it turns seasonal refreshes into part of my design process, not a scramble. It also makes it easier to shop with purpose later, because I already know what’s missing or what could elevate the look.
This step doesn’t always have to happen only at the end of the season you’ll be planning for - in fact, you’ll probably want to review your ideas closer to that season happening again, because you may also be inspired by whatever is trending. So for example, after Christmas, I use this step to plan for next Christmas, and then I glance over the plan again when I pack up my Halloween decorations the following year. This lets me see if I want to update anything else before decorating for Christmas again.
Your Quick Seasonal Checklist
This quick checklist gives me a super simple overview of tasks to complete each season once my system is set up, and I included one of these in the downloadable tracker. It is all about keeping things easy and repeatable:
Label bins clearly with the season and main room
Snap a quick photo of your favorite seasonal setup and tuck it inside the bin (so you remember what worked!)
Store similar seasons together—Spring + Summer or Fall + Winter
Keep one “Everyday Decor” bin for neutral/everyday staples that work year-round
Do a quick review of everything a couple times a year—after each season ends, and again before the next one begins
These small habits take a few minutes every season, but they save hours when it’s time to decorate again.
Why This System Works
This little tracker changed everything for me. My decor feels cohesive instead of cluttered, and I actually enjoy decorating because it’s simple, organized, and easy to sustain.
When everything you own has a place, and every piece you keep has a purpose, your home starts to feel calm—even in the middle of the seasonal shuffle.
The Seasonal Decor Storage Tracker isn’t just about storing things neatly—it’s about creating a home that evolves with you, one season at a time.
If you love systems that make decorating more intuitive (and less chaotic), you’ll find more like this inside the Curated Home Monthly Membership—filled with seasonal refresh guides, focused design projects, and easy step-by-step instructions to help you decorate with confidence, not clutter.
FAQs
What’s the best way to start organizing my seasonal decor if I have a lot of stuff?
Start small — truly. Pick one season, one room, or even one bin. You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. I like to start with whatever I’ll be decorating for next, so the payoff is immediate. As you go, use the Keep • Refresh • Release method: keep what you love, refresh what has potential, and release what doesn’t fit your home’s current story. The key is progress, not perfection.
How often should I review or update my bins?
Twice a year is ideal — once right after a season ends and again before the next one begins. That rhythm helps you stay organized without turning it into a big project. I use that quick review time to update labels, take new photos of favorite displays, and note what I might want to replace or add later. It keeps everything feeling fresh and intentional.
Do I need fancy bins or a big storage space for this to work?
Not at all. It’s less about what you store things in and more about how you do it. Clear bins are great for visibility, but even simple boxes can work beautifully if they’re labeled clearly. The goal isn’t Pinterest-perfect storage — it’s easy access, smart labeling, and knowing what’s inside. When your system fits your space (and your lifestyle), you’ll actually keep up with it.
